Speaking at a fringe event at the Liberal Democrat party conference, Jim Bond, chair of the Fostering Network, urged local authorities not to stop spending on independent foster care placements to save cash.
"If you look at the true cost of a local authority placement, there is not much difference between that and the cost the council would be charged by a private provider," he explained. "That’s if you realistically look at all the costs being paid out in terms of supervising social workers, support and management and so on."
Bond added that maintaining a choice of foster care placements in any one area is vital.
