Lib Dem Conference 2010: Free schools will create fairer system, argues New Schools Network director

The director of the charity charged by government with helping people set up new parent- and teacher-led schools has denied Liberal Democrat claims that free schools will increase inequalities in the education system.

Speaking at a fringe event at the party’s annual conference, Rachel Wolf, director of the New Schools Network, argued that free schools will help eliminate the "horrendous dual system", in which wealthier parents can either pay to send their children to private school or buy property in the "right" catchment area.

Her claims came in the wake of a vote that saw Liberal Democrat party members condemn the coalition government’s plans to introduce free schools as "divisive, costly and unfair".

"The poorest are too often stuck," Wolf said. "Allowing people to set up new schools and giving them more freedom will allow those pupils to have opportunities."
