Autistic children need better support

News from Ofsted that thousands of children are not attending school is something all professionals should be concerned about (cypnow.co.uk, 19 November).

Ofsted inspectors found that the reasons why some young people were missing out on full-time education include having complex needs, and social and behavioural problems.

One in 100 children in the UK has autism, and our School Report 2013 revealed that 60 per cent of teachers in England do not feel they have had adequate training to teach children with this life-long condition. This is a shocking statistic given that 71 per cent of children with autism are educated in mainstream schools.
