Leicester hospital-based nurseries could be closed to save NHS money

1 min read Early Years
Three hospital-based nurseries in Leicester could be closed because of financial difficulties faced by the local NHS Trust.

The nurseries, housed by Glenfield Hospital, The Royal Infirmary and Leicester General, cater for nearly 150 children in the area.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is currently consulting on ways to cut back on spending, which could include slashing the current spend of £433,000 on its childcare provision.

The trust's director of human resources Kate Bradley said:  "We haven't made any decisions yet, but the reality is it's our responsibility, even more so during these challenging financial times, to make sure every pound is spent efficiently.

"We're faced with a difficult decision about spending £400,000 each year subsidising three nurseries for the benefit of staff or spending it on essential services.
