Leeds City Council to review child protection case linked to Harehills disturbance

Leeds City Council will urgently review a child protection case linked to disorder in one of the city’s suburbs last week, local authority leaders have said.

Disturbance broke out in the Harehills area of the West Yorkshire City on Thursday (18 July) after social workers reportedly visited the home of a Roma family to remove their children.

West Yorkshire Police have charged one man with violent disorder and arson after a bus was set on fire during the incident.

A further five people have since been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Chief constable Pat Twiggs said following the incident: “Our officers responded to a call from children’s social care at around 5pm [on] Thursday 18 July after social workers reported being met with hostility when dealing with a child protection matter.
