According to HMP Inspectorate of Probation, the service’s work in safeguarding young people was only done well 50 per cent of the time, compared to an England and Wales average of 68 per cent.
Work to protect the public was carried out well just 42 per cent of the time, against an average score of 63 per cent and the service’s work to reduce reoffending was only done well enough 52 per cent of the time, well below the average of 71 per cent.
Assistant chief inspector Julie Fox said it was a "poor set of findings", adding that "we found a number of areas where practice fell below what was needed".
