Bridget Phillipson, Labour MP for Sunderland South, told CYP Now she fears mothers may not disclose vital information about sexual assaults or harrowing incidents they endured if their child or children are present in an official interview.
An answer to a parliamentary question tabled by Phillipson revealed that currently only one UK Border Agency office provides childcare during asylum interviews.
"It is very difficult to talk in front of children, even if they are too young to understand," Phillipson said. "You are preoccupied trying to care for your children rather than talking about difficult or sensitive matters.
"It is difficult enough without trying to stop an 18-month-old child pulling things off the table. Women need to be in a position to have a fair interview. If you are not seen to be absolutely open from the beginning it can be misinterpreted that what you subsequently say is untrue."
Answering Phillipson’s question, immigration minister Damian Green said the UK Border Agency building providing childcare facilities when a parent is being interviewed about their asylum claim is in the North West of England.
He added that in the West Midlands, the UK Border Agency is in the final stages of discussions with the Children's Society and hopes to provide a supervised play facility for the dependents of interviewees by January 2011.
"If these facilities prove successful and cost effective, we will consider extending this approach to other offices," he said.
"We are committed to ensuring that parents who are being interviewed about their reasons for seeking protection are not placed in the position of having to give an account of personal victimisation or humiliation in the presence of their children.
"In general, applicants are advised in their letter of invitation not to bring their children to the interview but to make alternative arrangements."
