Labour: Decade of youth work cuts to blame for increase in violent crime

Starmer highlighted analysis of figures from the House of Commons library on the sufficiency of youth services in England and Wales which found that between 2011 and 2019/20 funding had been cut by 68 per cent - amounting to around £660m.

Almost half of the areas with the deepest cuts were among those with the highest crime rates, the research found.

Speaking on a visit to youth service Reach and Unite Outreach and Empowerment CIC in Wolverhampton, Starmer described youth work as “one of the most effective ways of tackling the root causes of crime”.
