Labour conference: Lowering voting age would engage young people in politics

Lowering the voting age to 16 will help to get young people involved with politics, a Labour MP has said.

Andy Reed, Labour and Co-operative MP for Loughborough, told a fringe meeting at Labour's party conference in Brighton that current legislation can lead to a "great deal" of confusion.

"Young people aged 16 to 18 have a variety of things they can and can't do," Reed said. "If they can pay tax at that age they should have the chance to decide what it is spent on."

During the meeting, hosted by the Co-operative Group, a number of other possible ways of engaging children and young people in the political process were discussed.
