Bill proposes lowering voting age

Youth Work
MP's and campaigning organisations have lent their support to a bill proposing to lower the voting age to 16.

Julie Morgan, Labour MP for Cardiff North, presented the private member’s bill, in the hope of succeeding in lowering the voting age.

She said: “Not only is this the right thing to do for today’s young people, it is the right thing to do for our democracy as those who vote young tend to continue this habit for the rest of their lives.”

The Voting Age (Reduction) Bill is supported by the Electoral Reform Society and the Votes at 16 coalition.

Ken Ritchie, spokesman for the Electoral Reform Society, said: “Britain’s young citizens will not be truly represented in Parliament until they can exercise their right to vote.”
