Labour Conference: Knight considers change in well-being measurement

Education
Schools minister Jim Knight has agreed to consider allowing schools to measure well-being through self-evaluation.

Speaking at a Labour Party conference event, hosted by teachers’ union NASUWT and the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), the minister said he would evaluate the option in comparison with score-based approaches. He also admitted the government would be “foolish” to give schools too much responsibility for well-being.

John Dunford, general secretary of ASCL, said: “Frankly it did not need the government to place statutory well-being indicators on schools.”

But he urged Knight to “do a deal” with schools and arrange a mutually satisfactory system of self-evaluation, instead of numerical well-being measures.

Chris Keates, general secretary of NASUWT, welcomed plans to measure schools on well-being. However, she urged government to produce, “a clear and unambiguous definition of what schools do in relation to well-being.”
