Labour Conference 2010: Children's professionals called on to challenge government's plans for cuts

Professionals and volunteers working with families have been told they have a responsibility to challenge the government on its deficit reduction plans and demand the most vulnerable are protected from budget cuts.

After hearing a presentation from a Home Start volunteer and staff member at a Labour conference fringe meeting, MP for Stretford and Urmston Kate Green said the coalition's actions are "morally wrong".

"We are still a rich enough country to do better for those families than I believe the Con-Dem government has any intention of doing," she said. "They talk about some very admirable intentions, about wanting to support families, but they are pulling the rug from under their feet.

The government says it wants the voluntary sector to deliver more support to families – how hard is that to do when your funding is being axed? The government says it wants to improve the opportunities and chances of the poorest families – how hard is that to do when the first thing they do is attack the benefits on which those families raising children rely."
