Speaking at an Action for Children fringe event at the Labour Party conference, Gordon Marsden told delegates that the big society should be developed by consulting young people in a structured way.
"You need young people to have their voice," he said. "But in order to do that, you do need the support. Some of the people who are being cut in local authorities are the enabling people.
"This idea that in the big society everybody suddenly rises up from voluntary organisations and the private sector and is able to rush in like Superman is nonsense. The truth is that individual activity requires collective involvement and organisation. Actually, we need to keep those people in statutory organisations to do that."
