Kinship carers march on Treasury

Kinship carers have marched to the Treasury with empty shopping trollies to call for a financial allowance for all kinship carers.

Kinship, the UK’s leading kinship care charity, was behind the 50-strong rally, which took place alongside the release of its report showing that kinship carers contribute £4.3 billion to the UK economy each year, but thousands of carers are struggling to make ends meet.

The government has committed to trialling a new kinship allowance in up to 10 local authorities, but the charity wants to see these plans accelerated and a commitment made to guarantee financial allowances for all kinship families across the country.

The report, a collaboration with researchers from the Centre for Care at Sheffield University, reveals that one in eight kinship carers raising the child of a relative or friend, might have to give up due to a lack of financial support.
