Kent plans to overhaul youth service

Councillors in Kent are set to debate plans to encourage more community organisations to run youth services, but which could also see the loss of up to 64 jobs.

In an attempt to reduce the council spend on youth services by nearly £1m while retaining both universal and targeted provision for young people, plans have been drawn up that propose to reduce council-run youth services and increase the number that are commissioned out to community and private providers.

Following a review of current youth provision in the county, the council has developed a model that will mean each of the 12 district or borough areas in the county have one "hub" or youth centre, which will be either directly delivered by the council or commissioned out. Additionally, there will be council-run street-based projects and one or more school-based youth workers.
