Justice secretary orders mental health study

Youth Justice
The government has ordered an independent review of how mentally ill young people can be kept out of prison.

Justice secretary Jack Straw has asked Labour peer Lord Bradley to carry out the review, which will give its conclusions to the Department of Health and Ministry of Justice this summer.

The review will examine the extent to which offenders with mental health problems or learning disabilities could, in appropriate cases, be diverted from prison to other services. It will also look at the barriers to diversion.

In a letter asking health professionals for their views, Lord Bradley said young people in the criminal justice system are a particularly vulnerable and high-risk group.

Comments for the review should be emailed to bradleyreview@dh.gsi.gov.uk before 28 February.
