The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities' Out of AuthorityPlacement and Joint Commissioning Unit was hailed as a pioneering way tocoordinate care between 12 councils when it was established in February2005.
The unit will now run on a skeleton staff of two rather than the sevenit started with and key projects have been put on hold. It will continueto run a web database to help social workers find care placements forchildren but will no longer accredit and monitor care providers asplanned.
A spokesman admitted: "The accreditation process will reduce and theemphasis will be on monitoring outcomes." But he insisted that work onjoint commissioning and analysing placement activity of the authoritieswould not be affected.
