Integrated universal and targeted youth provision crucial in fight to combat stigma, warns Catch22

Catch22 has told the government it must remove the stigma attached to young people's services by ensuring a mix of both universal and targeted provision.

The call follows the publication of the education select committee’s report into youth services, which criticised the government’s lack of youth policy.

According to Catch22, the government must now focus on providing both universal and targeted services or risk stigmatising young people who access them.

Chris Wright, the charity’s chief operating officer, said: "We believe that both universal and targeted services have important elements for ensuring that young people are properly supported and by combining them to good effect government can design services that are inclusive, working in young people’s favour rather than marginalising them."

Wright said that by delivering open-access youth provision in targeted areas a good mix can be achieved.
