Inquest opens into teenage asylum-seeker's death

1 min read Social Care
An inquest has opened today into the death of an 18-year-old asylum seeker in custody.

Sudanese national Joker Idris was found hanging in his cell on Christmas Day 2007, while nearing the end of a six-month prison term for affray.

The previous day he had been told that he was to remain in custody at the end of his sentence before being deported back to Sudan.

A statement issued by his family's legal team the Inquest Lawyers Group says that Idris had arrived in the UK alone at the age of 15 after an attack on his village by Sudanese militia.

The statement adds that the family hope the inquest will uncover more details surrounding social services support while he was in care and following his arrest.
