Inaugural group of young volunteers completes City Year London programme

The first cohort of young people is set to graduate from a three-year pilot scheme in London, having spent more than 65,000 hours volunteering to support children, schools and communities across the capital.

City Year London began recruiting last year and picked 60 young people aged 18 to 25 to join its volunteering programme in the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Islington.

A graduation ceremony on Thursday (30 June) will mark the end of the first year, which has seen the 60 young people work with 2,000 children, supporting them in classrooms, playgrounds and with after-school activities.

Two-thirds of the volunteers have now secured a place in further education, employment or training.

Sophie Livingstone, chief executive of City Year London, said: "I am so proud of the achievements of all our City Year London corps this year, who have really embraced the concept of changing the world through full-time volunteering.
