In the 5-18 January edition of CYP Now magazine, published today, Children England chief executive Kathy Evans says planned government reforms to remove “inadequate” children’s services departments from council control if they fail to improve is a “set up” because there is no evidence improvement can be delivered in that timescale.
Her concerns are backed by Ray Jones, professor of social work at Kingston University, who says changing management structures in children’s services could divert resources away from frontline child protection work.
The article also looks in detail at how the government’s children’s services improvement initiatives – the Partners in Practice programme and What Works Centre – will foster innovation across the sector. In addition, child protection experts assess how the government plans to reform local safeguarding children boards and serious case reviews.
