Head teachers to be held responsible for excluded pupils' education

1 min read Education Discipline and exclusions
Head teachers at 300 schools across the country are to become responsible for organising and monitoring the education of children they exclude.

As part of a Department for Education (DfE) trial designed to boost the attainment of expelled pupils, head teachers will be given funding to allow them to choose the best form of alternative provision for individual children.

Until now, local authorities have been in charge of funding and overseeing alternative education, such as pupil referral units.

One in 10 secondary schools and around 3,000 pupils will be part of the trial, which will span three school years and finish in July 2014.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said the trial would help encourage schools to intervene early with children who are at risk of being excluded.
