Hackney's child protection improvements impress Ofsted

The London Borough of Hackney's child protection work has been praised by Ofsted, following an unannounced visit last month.

Inspectors made the rare move of not identifying any areas for development during the inspection of the council’s contact, referral and assessment arrangements.

They were particularly impressed with improvements to the way social workers work collaboratively with professionals across health in assessing cases.

The co-location of social workers with health professionals gave "increased professional insight and depth" when assessing risk, inspectors found.

Staff were found to be "highly motivated and enthusiastic" and well supported by "knowledgeable, experienced and accessible managers".

Rotherham, Stockton-on-Tees and Rutland councils were also subject to unannounced inspections last month.

None received any notices that priority action was needed to address concerns, although Rotherham was the only one of the three where inspectors were able to highlight any strengths.
