Government unveils radical school reform bills

1 min read Education
The government has unveiled new legislation to radically reform school accountability, improve behaviour in schools and drastically increase the number of academies.

Two new bills, the Education and Children's Bill and the Academies Bill, will be pushed through Parliament, so that new academies and free schools could open as early as September this year.

The Education and Children's Bill will give schools the freedom to deliver education however they see fit.

It will reform Ofsted so that head teachers are held accountable for pupil attainment and narrowing the gap between rich and poor.

It will also introduce a slimmer curriculum, a pupil premium for disadvantaged young people, a Year 6 reading test to identify problems early on and new powers for teachers to improve behaviour and tackle bullying.
