The strategy, backed by £20m in funding, lays out plans to pilot an uplift in financial allowances for kinship carers to match those offered to foster carers. This stands currently at between £154 and £270 per week, per child.

The uplift will be trialed in up to eight areas of the country between 2024 and 2028 and “will help ensure that people do not have to choose between becoming a carer and being able to afford to support their families”, the government has said.

It will also expand the role of virtual school heads to cover kinship care.

“They will ensure that the education of children in kinship care is prioritised so they go on to have bright futures,” according to DfE.
