Government intervenes to improve Sandwell safeguarding

1 min read Social Care
Sandwell Council has been issued with a government improvement notice due to concerns over its safeguarding practices.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo has written to the council today setting out the Department for Children, Schools and Families' (DCSF) expectations for "rapid and sustainable improvement".

The intervention will include setting up an improvement board at the council with an independent chair. The board will be tasked with approving an improvement plan drawn up by the council, which must address the targets and requirements set out in the improvement notice.

Earlier this year, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission slammed Sandwell's safeguarding practices in a damning report. But in an unannounced inspection published last July inspectors did not identify any areas for priority action.

The DCSF will now work with the council to identify any areas of weakness in its safeguarding services.
