Government funding for Auschwitz trips

Education
The government has put forward 4.65m pounds so two pupils from every sixth form and college in England can visit Auschwitz and learn about the Holocaust.

Schools minister Jim Knight has revealed that he is giving the cash to the Holocaust Educational Trust to continue its ‘Lessons from Auschwitz' programme for another three years until 2011.

Each visit takes up to 200 students from across the country to Auschwitz in Poland, where expert guides and educators from the UK show pupils around the site.

On returning to their schools and communities, students are required to disseminate what they have learned to their peers through a variety of activities and programmes.

Knight said: "Sometimes getting out of the classroom and actually visiting the places where historic events happened can be the best way to truly grasp the enormity of what occurred."
