Government figures confirm annual rise in Neet numbers

There has been an annual increase in the proportion of 16-to 18-year-olds who are not in education or work, latest figures show.

Statistics released by the Department for Education show that at the end of 2011, 8.1 per cent of young people were classed as not in education, employment or training (Neet), compared to 7.5 per cent at the end of 2010.

Meanwhile the proportion of 16-to 18-year-olds in full-time education fell from 70.6 per cent in 2010 to 70.5 per cent in 2011 - the first time the proportion has fallen since 2001.

A breakdown of the figures shows that 9.1 per cent of boys in the age group were Neet compared to 7.1 per cent of girls, at the end of last year.
