The Department of Health and Social Care will pilot transparent masks in 2022 throughout the country, ministers have announced.

The pilot will explore and analyse both how usable the masks are, and how effective the clear masks are at improving communication between staff and patients.

The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) has described the move as a “game-changer” for deaf young people and children who rely on lip reading and facial expressions to communicate.
