Funds needed to fight exploitation

Social Care
Ministers must back up efforts to tackle sexual exploitation with extra money or risk putting children at risk, the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has said.

David Barnes, professional officer for England at BASW, said while he supported the government’s draft guidance on tackling the sexual exploitation of children, he feared that unless more money is put into services there is a risk of creating unrealistic expectations about what local services can do to help.

The guidance will be valuable but if we starting raising expectations about what will be achieved without putting in extra resources it could be counter-productive, he said.

It could put people in danger if they think because of this the help is available when there aren’t the funds to match that expectation.

BASW has also urged the government to make it clearer in the final version of its Safeguarding Children from Sexual Exploitation guidance which agencies should led work to tackle the problem in different circumstances.
