Funding problems hit youth foundation

A highly regarded project working with young black men in London has been forced to suspend a key part of its work due to funding problems.

The From Boyhood to Manhood Foundation has shut its day programme, which works with young men who have been excluded from school or are on the verge of exclusion.

Other parts of its work, such as its peer mentoring programme, counselling, and Calling the Shots prison-based scheme are still running. But the day programme is closed until January.

Keith Vaz, the Labour MP for Leicester East, has raised the issue in Parliament.

He has tabled an early day motion calling on the Home Office to provide regular funding to the foundation.

Uanu Seshmi, director of the foundation, said the project has received some assurances from government that it will look to support its work.
