Footage of Peter Connelly's mother revealed

Social Care
A filmed interview between a social worker and the mother of murdered toddler Peter Connelly, has been described as "appalling" by the chair of Haringey's local safeguarding children's board.

In the previously unseen footage exposed by BBC’s Panorama programme, Tracey Connelly is filmed explaining why her child Peter sustained injuries to his chin.

Senior team manager Sue Gilmore, who conducts the interview, is also told about Connelly’s friend Steven Barker who, along with Connelly, was later convicted of causing or allowing the death of Peter.

Speaking to the Panorama investigation team Graham Badman, who led the serious case review as the chair of Haringey’s local safeguarding children’s board, said: "There are several occasions when Peter's life could and should have been saved, from the first case conference through to the paediatrician's failure to act decisively at the end of the life."

He told the programme that the footage illustrated that the case was handled with misplaced optimism.
