The research, which quizzed more than a 1,000 companies, revealed that just 26 per cent are planning to hire working mothers in 2011 compared to 38 per cent last year.
A further 38 per cent of employers said they fear that working mothers may show less commitment and flexibility than other employees and 17 per cent said they were worried that women who return to the workplace after having a child will have out-of-date skills.
But 67 per cent of firms said they think companies that ignore returning mothers are missing out on a significant part of the employment pool. In addition, 51 per cent think working mums have skills that are difficult to find in the current market.
