Fears over Early Years Professionals leaving nurseries

1 min read Early Years
A senior government official has admitted Early Years Professionals are being lured away from nurseries and pre-schools and into other roles.

Sheila Scales, director for early years at the Department for Children, Schools and Families said she was aware people with Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) could be exploring other job avenues.
The government has said EYPS is on a par with qualified teacher status but those in the sector argue it is not as well-paid and well-respected. It has also been argued nursery workers may be using EYPS as a way to get into teacher training or other sectors within the children’s workforce.
Scales said: “EYPS is a fantastic qualification but it’s still very new and we recognise we need to get it established. One of my worries about talking to people with EYPS is they are being lured out of early years settings and into management, and it’s something we have started to worry about and we’re anxious to tackle.”
Scales was speaking at the Pre-School Learning Alliance’s conference on the Early Years Foundation Stage.
