Social care and early years leaders have criticised the roll-out of £300m in government funding for family hubs across 75 local authorities over two years as a “missed opportunity” for longer term support.

This week, the government revealed which local authorities will benefit from the family hubs scheme, adding that 14 local authorities have been chosen as “trailblazers” and will be offered extra funding to lead the scheme's rollout.

Family hubs offer support to families from conception through to the age of 19, or up to 25 for children with special education needs and disabilities.

Though social care and early years leaders have welcomed the investment in family hubs, many have said criticised the move as a “belated action” and a “missed opportunity” for long-term investment.

Shadow minister for early years and children Helen Hayes said: “For nearly thirteen years the Conservatives have stripped away the basic support families rely on. The government's belated action on family hubs will do little to make up for the loss of over 1,300 valued Sure Start children’s centres since 2010.
