In the responses to the Department for Constitutional Affairs'consultation Confidence and Confidentiality: Improving transparency andprivacy in family courts, 40 per cent of people said the media shouldnot get to attend family proceedings as a right.
The summary of responses also said: "There was strong and broadagreement that there should be judicial discretion to exclude."
Disagreeing with the proposal were the Association of District Judgesand the Council of Circuit Judges, who represent the judiciary in countycourts.
In his response, Lord Justice Wall said: "I am in favour of giving themedia access to family proceedings, provided that there are clear groundrules."
