Families with disabled children 'missing out on childcare'

A third of local authorities in England are failing to provide statutory information on childcare options for children with disabilities, leading to some families missing out on childcare, research has found.

A report published by the Family and Childcare Trust (Fact) found that 32 per cent of all local authorities in England are not including childcare provision in their local offer.

As a result, disabled children are missing out on early education, the charity has warned. The law requires local authorities to set out in one place the local provision on offer for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including childcare information.

Fact analysed the provision of guidance, advice and brokerage for parents looking for childcare, the scope and quality of information about childcare in local offer directory listings, and local authorities' provision of SEND guidance for early years and childcare providers.
