Early years leaders have criticised the accounts after latest HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) figures revealed that more than 405,000 families have used their tax-free childcare account, despite more than a million entitled to government childcare support.

The government is urging more families to sign up for the benefits to avoid missing out on their entitlements, which are available to children up to the age of 11 and include early years provision as well as breakfast and holiday clubs. Children with disabilities are entitled to the tax-free support until the age of 16.
