An online brochure for the proposed Marmaduke Pickthall Academy for Boyssays the school will specialise in languages and enterprise and be opento all. But it will have an emphasis on the Muslim faith.
The Muslim Council of Britain welcomed the news, saying it supportsfaith-based teaching. Tahir Alam, chair of the council's educationcommittee, said: "There is an issue in Bradford of underachievement inMuslim communities. If this can address that it would be verywelcome."
But the National Union of Teachers expressed dismay at another potentialacademy. A union spokesman said: "We do not want any more academies asthey are a vehicle for the group who controls them to peddle its ownagenda."
