A London borough has hit back at the government's tough new stance on failing schools.
Kingsdale School in Southwark could be targeted for closure under new measures announced this week, which will force local authorities to either improve exam results or face schools being closed or turned into academies.
But Lisa Rajan, executive member for children's services at Southwark Council, said the school had been recognised by junior schools minister Andrew Adonis as one of the most improved in England in the last three years.
"We are very proud of the significant achievements made at Kingsdale," she said. "Instead of undermining the dedicated efforts of the school to improve standards it would be more constructive for the government to acknowledge the success this school has had in raising standards."
Head teacher Steve Morrison added half the pupils at the school did not speak English as a first language.
"A fairer system of assessment is required," he said.
