Extended services: Provider's daily battle' with Ofsted

An outside-school club provider last week accused Ofsted of penalising play providers and organisations providing an all-ages setting.

Fiona Mortlock, head of service at Schoolfriendetc, told Children Now she battles daily with the children's services watchdog. "The revamp of the Ofsted registration system has completely sidelined play and playwork," she said. "There is a difference between play work and early years settings. If children are running on tables because they are in a jungle or on a pirate ship as far as I am concerned that is fine as long as staff are watching."

An Ofsted spokesperson said: "Play providers are not disadvantaged in the inspection process because our framework is the same for all settings."
