Extended schools: Camden pinpoints what factors make good after-school clubs

1 min read
Music activities and children's relationships with each other can make a major difference to children's satisfaction with after-school clubs.

An analysis by the London Borough of Camden's play service hasidentified several factors that can explain why children rate theirafter-school club as good or bad.

The analysis, which is as yet unpublished, is based on the responses of625 children, aged between four and 13, to the borough's annualchildren's satisfaction survey.

Gemma Cooper, consultation and participation officer at Camden's playservice, said: "We carried out a statistical analysis in order toidentify correlations in what children rated as good or bad. We wereable to identify the factors that, if improved, would increasechildren's satisfaction and attendance."

The analysis identified four main factors that increase children'ssatisfaction at an after-school club: taking part in music or danceactivities; taking part in children's meetings and surveys; the clubbeing seen as offering enough activities that are appropriate for thechild's age; and playworkers who can chat to children all of the timeinstead of just some of the time.
