Employer-school partnerships key for youth job prospects, inquiry finds

Local partnerships between schools, employers and councils are key to reducing youth unemployment rates, a cross-party group of local politicians has concluded.

An inquiry into school careers advice services across Buckinghamshire highlighted the need for the local authority and schools to take preventative action.

Buckinghamshire County Council’s education, skills and children’s services committee reviewed current practice across the county, visited businesses and interviewed young people, parents, schools and employers during the seven-month inquiry.

According to a report of the findings, many young people reported a lack of careers guidance, with schools focusing on exam results and doing little to prepare them for employment or post-18 education or training.

As a result, the committee has put forward nine recommendations designed to better prepare young people for the world of work.
