The Centre for the Economics of Education study Urban Density and PupilAttainment compared the academic progress of children born in innercities with those who later moved to inner cities.
It found evidence of "small but significant benefits" from education ininner city schools. It also found pupils who moved into inner cityschools progressed faster than children in their previous school. Theresearchers said these pupils did better because inner city schools getmore support through Government initiatives like academies and theLondon Challenge programme.
The researchers concluded Government initiatives to improve inner cityschooling are making "a real and tangible difference to the lives ofpupils". But they said more needs to be done to tackle the widerdisadvantage in inner cities that is holding children back atschool.
