1 min read
Homophobic bullying in schools should be taken as seriously as racism, the new junior children's minister has said.

Speaking at a conference last week organised by gay rights groupStonewall, Kevin Brennan emphasised the Government's commitment totackle the problem, but admitted that there was still a long way to go."We are determined to tackle bullying in all its forms and we are tryingto create a culture where homophobic bullying is as unacceptable asracist bullying," he said. "Legislation is a first step."

Brennan, a former teacher, said the Government would be issuing guidanceto schools to help teachers better understand how to deal withhomophobic bullying. The guidance will form part of a package ofmeasures to deal with bullying. "Teachers are often unsure what to do,"said Brenna. "We need to make sure that every teacher has the skills todeal with homophobic bullying. We expect all schools to implement thisguidance."
