Doncaster appoints new director of children's services

1 min read Education Social Care
Doncaster has appointed a new director of children's services in an attempt to improve "serious weaknesses" in the authority's safeguarding procedures.

Gareth Williams, Leicestershire County Council's director of children's services, will replace current interim director Paul Gray, on a six-month secondment.

During the temporary measure Williams will retain his duty as director at Leicestershire.

Earlier this month children's minister Beverley Hughes called for the council to appoint a new senior management team to run its children's services. She said: "I am particularly concerned that serious weaknesses have been identified in Doncaster's children's services as a whole, and in safeguarding in particular."

Hughes also used powers in the Education Act 1996 to direct Doncaster to appoint Tony Elson, former chief executive of Kirklees council, to chair an independent improvement board, which will report directly to ministers.

Williams said: "I am sure working at Doncaster Council will be tremendously challenging. But I am impressed by the desire of everyone to make rapid improvements and work very hard to that end for the people of Doncaster."

Doncaster was one of eight local authorities judged inadequate in their safeguarding of children at the end of last year.
