Disproportionality in youth justice system 'as bad as in America', former shadow justice secretary warns

Racial disproportionality in England and Wales’ youth justice system “is comparatively as bad as some states in the United States of America”, the former shadow justice secretary has warned.

Richard Burgon, Labour MP for Leeds West, who held the position of shadow justice secretary from 2016 until April this year, made the powerful comparison during a meeting of the House of Commons justice committee this week.

Burgon added that more needed to be done throughout the system to address “poor” perceptions of young black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people.

He said: “All too often a group of BAME youngsters are perceived as a gang and a group of white youngsters are perceived is a group of white youngsters even if they engage in anti-social behaviour.”
