Published for the first time, the NHS Atlas of Variation for Children and Young People shows the marked differences in standards across 27 health areas, such as asthma treatment, A&E attendance and breastfeeding.
A seven-fold variation in inpatient admissions for children with mental health disorders was among the widest variations.
A three-fold variation in breastfeeding rates for babies aged between six to eight weeks and a five-fold variation in the rate of children with asthma admitted for emergency hospital treatment have also emerged.
Another area of variation involved serious emergency conditions among children with diabetes. According to the atlas, there is a 2.6-fold variation in the percentage of children with the condition admitted to hospital suffering from diabetes ketoacidosis, which can lead to coma or death.
