The announcement, made by Education Secretary Gavin Williamson over the weekend, has been welcomed by youth sports bodies, who say it will ensure pupil health and wellbeing remains a key part of the curriculum when schools fully reopen in September.

The PE and Sport Premium is a ringfenced grant for English primary schools to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity.

Allocations to schools are determined by a formula based on pupil numbers. The average one form entry primary school will receive roughly £18,000 per year, the DfE said.

Launched in 2013 with £160m, the value of the premium was doubled to £320m in 2017 and has remained at that level since.
