CYP Now reported last month that the MP for Scarborough and Whitby had been lined up to take on an expanded brief - consisting of remits previously covered by two ministers - Edward Timpson, who lost his seat at the general election, and Caroline Dinenage, who moved to the Department for Work and Pensions following a post-election government reshuffle.
In addition to child protection, and children in care, Goodwill's brief will include childcare policy, including delivery of the 30 hours free childcare offer, and early years policy, including inspection, regulation, literacy and numeracy.
He will also be responsible for the pupil premium, government policy on free school meals, special educational needs and disabilities, school sports and healthy pupils, cadets and military ethos in the education system, and improving social mobility in 12 so-called "opportunity areas" identified by government as needing additional support to improve children's social mobility.
